CDC Warns of Severe Vibrio Infections Associated With Warming Coastal Waters

The CDC issued a health alert about recent reports of fatal Vibrio vulnificus infections, including wound and foodborne infections.

Vibrio bacteria, which live in coastal waters, including salt and brackish water, cause an estimated 80,000 illnesses each year in the United States. About a dozen species of Vibrio are pathogenic to humans; most (40%) are caused by V. parahaemolyticus, followed by V. alginolyticus, which accounts for about 20%. Most people with Vibrio infections
