Even though cases of hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection have fallen by more than 97% since the introduction of hepatitis A vaccines in 1996, large outbreaks have been reported across the United States in recent years.
Since the 1990s, the epidemiology of the disease has changed, with most infections occurring among people reporting injection or non–injection drug use or experiencing homelessness, compared with cases seen in the pre-vaccine era of which the majority of
