Ice machines in hospitals are contributing to the spread of gram-negative bacilli and Candida species, according to a new study.
While the researchers found bacteria on multiple ice machine components, they think most contamination occurs when ice chips fall into drain pans, causing contaminated water to splash on the hands and/or cups of users (Infect Control Hosp Epidemiol 2018;39[3]:253-258).
