Mycobacterial Infections in Cardiac Patients Tied to Ice, Water Machines

By Ethan Covey

Four cases of severe mycobacterial infections that occurred in cardiac surgery patients were likely caused by contamination of hospital ice and water machines. Three patients died.

A study found that use of a commercial water filtration unit, which had been installed to improve the taste of patients’ water and minimize odors, may have inadvertently facilitated microbial growth and colonization (Ann Intern Med 7 Mar 2023).
