Guinea Worm Disease Appears Close to Eradication

By IDSE News Staff

Only 22 cases of dracunculiasis (Guinea worm disease) were reported worldwide in 2015, a reduction of 83% from the 126 cases reported in 2014. This change represents the single largest percentage reduction in human cases in the history of the global eradication campaign, which began in 1986, when there were an estimated 3.5 million Guinea worm cases occurring annually in Africa and Asia, according to The Carter Center in Atlanta, which has spearheaded the eradication campaign.
