Breastfeeding, Preterm Birth Predict Infant C. difficile Carrier Status

By David Wild

Infants born before term and those who are not breastfed are more likely to carry toxigenic Clostridioides difficile during their first year, according to an analysis of data from over 730 infants. The study, presented at the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition 2021 annual meeting (abstract 672), found an overall toxigenic C. difficile prevalence of 38% during the first year of life.
