Newborns’ Microbiome May Affect Infection Risks, Weight

AMSTERDAM—The mode of delivery influences the development of the gut microbiota in newborns, independently of a mother’s use of antibiotics, according to research presented at the 2019 annual European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (abstract 6650).  

This, in turn, may affect infants’ respiratory health during the first year of life, the researchers said.

The prospective Microbiome Utrecht Infant Study (initiated by the
