Although Rare, Pediatric Intracranial Infections Rose During COVID-19 Pandemic

Rates of pediatric intracranial infections, including brain abscesses, epidural empyemas and subdural empyemas, rose in the United States beginning in mid-2021, and reached high peaks during the winter of 2022-2023.

These infections, which are often preceded by viral respiratory infection and sinusitis and may be heightened by increased pediatric respiratory pathogen transmission, remain rare, experts said (MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep 2023;72:608-610).

A CDC investigation used data
