Syphilis Screening Recommended for Pregnant Women

With the rates of syphilis in the United States having nearly doubled from 2012 to 2016, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) is recommending screening for all pregnant women.

Screening early in pregnancy can reduce the risk for babies being born with syphilis and prevent infection-related issues, such as blindness, deafness, skeletal deformities and even death (JAMA 2018;320[9]:911-917).

The release is a reaffirmation of the grade A recommendation that USPSTF released
