More than 100,000 people in the United States died from a drug overdose between April 2020 and April 2021—a 28.5% increase, according to provisional data from the National Center for Health Statistics.

“This translates to an American perishing from a drug overdose death every five minutes,” said Rahul Gupta, MD, MPH, MBA, FACP, the director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, during a press briefing.
