In response to rising rates of meningococcal disease cases caused by ciprofloxacin-resistant strains of Neisseria meningitidis, the CDC issued implementation guidance for health departments regarding the use of antibiotic prophylaxis in resistant areas (MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep 2024;73[5]:99-103).
“Meningococcal disease is a life-threatening illness requiring prompt antibiotic treatment for patients and prophylaxis for their close contacts to prevent secondary cases,”
