No Rise in HIV in N.Y.C. Despite Increased IV Drug Use

BOSTON—Although unintentional drug overdoses in New York City have risen in recent years, there has not yet been an increase in HIV transmission related to injectable drug use.

The current opioid epidemic has caused steep increases in overdoses across the United States. Users of prescription opioids frequently begin using heroin, subsequently transitioning to injecting the drug, which is a risk factor for HIV transmission.
