More People Living With HIV

By David Wild

Although the number of new HIV infections has remained stagnant here and abroad, more people are living with the disease. Almost 40 million individuals were living with HIV in 2015 compared with 2.4 million in 1985 (Lancet HIV 2016;3[8]:e361-e387).

One of the reasons why more individuals are surviving is the increased use of antiretroviral therapy (ART), with an estimated 70% of U.S. HIV patients using ART in 2015.
