A case of measles has been identified in an out-of-state resident visiting Colorado, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment(CDPHE) and Gunnison Department of Health and Human Services.

Monitor for Exposure Through Early August
The case was reported via a press release on July 22, 2025. Health officials in Colorado have notified the public of two potential areas of exposure—the Taylor Park Trading Post, in Almont, and the Gunnison Valley Health Hospital, in Gunnison.

Individuals who visited the Taylor Park Trading Post on Saturday, July 12, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., are being asked to monitor for potential symptoms of measles through August 2. People who may have been at the Gunnison Valley Health Hospital from 3 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16, through 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 17, should monitor for symptoms through August 8.

“The recent measles case identified in Colorado in an out-of-state resident shows that while we don’t have measles circulating in Colorado now, it is still occurring in other places and can lead to exposures in Colorado,” a CDPHE spokesperson told Infectious Disease Special Edition.

To date, no cases associated with the exposures in Colorado announced this week have been reported.

“Visitors to Colorado and Colorado residents who travel elsewhere could be at risk for measles if they are not vaccinated and can then spread measles to others in the state,” said the spokesperson, who did not wish to be identified. “Healthcare providers should consider measles when treating patients with a fever and a rash, especially if they are unvaccinated or have traveled outside of the state recently. Identifying cases allows us to notify the people who may have been exposed so that they can watch for symptoms or get post-exposure prophylaxis to help prevent severe illness and take steps to avoid spreading measles to others if they become ill.”

Previous Outbreak Is Over
While this newly reported case raises concern regarding potential exposure in Colorado, health officials in the state say the measles outbreak there has ended. Per the CDC, a measles outbreak is defined as three or more related cases.

The outbreak, which began in the spring of 2025, was caused by an out-of-state traveler who flew through Denver International Airport while infectious in May 2025. Among the 16 measles cases in Colorado residents in 2025, 10 are associated with that traveler — four were passengers on the Turkish Airlines flight with the index case, five were at Denver International Airport during the exposure period and one is a contact of a secondary case.

The last confirmed cases tied to this outbreak had a rash onset on June 7.

“Since no additional cases related to this outbreak have been identified in Colorado, [the investigation] closed on July 23, which is two full incubation periods after the last case was infectious,” the CDPHE spokesperson told IDSE. “There has been no evidence of ongoing community transmission related to this outbreak—all cases in Colorado were linked either to the initial out-of-state traveler or to a secondary case.”
