First Report of Rabies in South American Anteater Results in Multiple U.S. Exposures

More than 20 people were exposed to a rabid anteater that was transferred from Virginia to a zoo in Tennessee during the spring of 2021, according to an investigative report by the CDC and Tennessee Department of Health.

The case is the first known occurrence of rabies in a South American collared anteater (Tamandua tetradactyla) (MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep 2022;71:533-537).
