Chiggers in North Carolina were found carrying a bacterium that causes scrub typhus, according to a new study (Emerg Infect Dis 2923;29[8]:1676-1679 https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/29/8/23-0528_article).
However, the disease itself has not yet been detected in animals or humans in the state, the researchers were quick to point out. To date, scrub typhus has not been reported in the United States.
