Burden of Chagas Disease in South Texas

By IDSE News Staff

Researchers at the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, in Houston, suggest that the Chagas disease burden in south Texas is much higher than previously thought (PLoS Negl Trop Dis 2016 Nov 10. [Epub ahead of print]).

Considering up to 30% of people infected with Trypanosoma cruzi can develop fatal cardiomyopathy, the findings carry important implications to the health of the population of south Texas.
